If there’s one thing I’m absolutely loving from the SS15 and Couture catwalk shows, it’s that fresh flawless skin is going to be a big hit. Natural beauty, minimal coverage, and slightly enhanced features with just a slick of nude or bold red are just everywhere at the moment thanks to Chanel Couture and Burberry’s ‘The Birds and The Bees‘ campaign, and I for one am fully on board with this new-classic minimalism.
Think strong and defined brows, bold rouge reds, and ‘your skin but better’ foundations and finishes to give you the slickest look in fashion with zero-fuss and total ease. I find this trend a very ‘Parisian meets Hollywood glamour’ take on the red lip, with Burberry giving it that British ‘Cool Girl’ edge with a deeper red lip and fuller brows whilst Chanel channels glossy pink/tomato reds to make the lips the main show with just some enhancement of the eyes. Personally, I’m digging the Burberry look with the striking features and ‘glowing from within’ skin; there’s something so familiar and wearable about their version which makes me reach for a red lip more often these days, and give my eyes and foundation a bit of a break to let my lips do the talking – literally.
So how easy is to wear? Well, I could happily roll out of bed every day and slick all the components on with ease and know it would look good it’s that easy. And the best part is that most of the things you need are already in your make-up stash; for instant brightness, the Clarins Beauty Flash Balm awakens the skin and injects some life to it, whilst a highlight under foundation – such as Benefit Watt’s Up – helps define the areas that catch the light without showing too much product on the skin. For a long lasting even finish to the skin which doesn’t look to cakey but still gives you coverage, I’ve gone for the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation which buffed into the centre of the face and lightly outwards gives a natural finish with the right amount of dewiness, and all you need is a dab of concealer under the eye – again, the ol’faithful NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer – to make you look perky and awake with stripped back eyes.
Now for the main draw of this look, the lips and brows. I like to use a product with a spoolie and easy workable formula to get my brows looking full yet natural so the Sleek Makeup Brow Stylist* ticks all the boxes for me, as you want to subtly enhance the shape and colour without it looking too done. A taupe-nude shadow gives an illusion of colour whilst still looking natural, and a shade similar to MAC Wedge or Naked Palette 1’s Naked are perfect choices for girls with paler skintones. Now, the use of mascara is a bit debatable with this look – both Chanel and Burberry went without – so if you’re brave, just curl your lashes and go, but if you need some then just lightly swipe on so your lashes look a bit more defined but not ‘done’. Next, subtle definition – there’s no hint of blush or bronze here, just some sculpting of the cheekbones in a near-natural shade so I blended the Rimmel Match Perfection Creamy Compact Powder with a little MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Medium/Dark for a grey undertone with a hint of shadow that just gives your face the look of prominent cheekbones naturally.
Finally it’s time to slick on a bold red lip which is a big contrast to the usual pastels and pinks of the summer collections before. Personally I like a strong true red that brightens my face and teeth, so it’s always going to be MAC Russian Red for a classic statement in a look like this – it suits all skintones universally and just brings out such a gorgeous colour to the skin which I adore. To make them really go ‘pow’, make sure you line the lips so there’s a sharp but softly defined edge to your natural shape, and then you’re done!
This look is all about layering the base to achieve and enhance the flawless natural glow of your skin, and making your features stand out with sculpting and bold products, and I have to say it works; my skin looks and feels amazing, totally fresh, and just a strong lip and brows make me feel like my natural features and skin are being shown off instead of using lots of blush, bronzer and liner as per usual, and the whole trend just works perfectly for any beauty junkie who’s on the go or wanting something easy.
New-classic minimalism is definitely a look to consider, and if anything can make me feel a bit Parisian and glam then this is it – just throw me some more Breton stripes and I’m all set! The Birds and The Bees have flown straight into my heart, and I’m ready for that honey glow every day of the week.
Are you a fan of this look? Did you love Burberry and Chanel’s catwalk beauty? Will you being stripping back the mascara this season?
Lots of Love,
