With the countdown to Fashion Week officially started, I am seriously excited to see what the designers and brands are gearing up to showcase in their new collections for AW15. Aside from the new beauty trends and runway collections from Joseph, Holly Fulton, Eudon Choi, Topshop, Temperley, and of course, Burberry – which is always on-point and the one I make sure to stream live – there are plenty of fashion brands currently in the swing of showing their SS15 collections at various press days, including one which I popped along to last week for Dutch brand Sandwich – the perfect mix of minimalism with a ‘twist’.
The lovely ladies at Gemini Woman invited me down to get to know Sandwich better, being one of their largest stockists and distributors in the UK, and to open up the brand to the world of blogging and a new audience. So with the promise of some soft Aztec prints and plenty of blue – you know I love my blue – I headed on down to see why we should be buying more of the ‘treasure trove’ brand.
Firstly, I really love how the collections are split into four categories; two for Spring and Summer day times, and two for the evenings which have a bit more print and bolder colours to them. There’s a lot of the usual suspects – pastel pinks, mint and blue – but also some nice twists such as the Aztec prints, loose fitting trousers, and the softest jeans you’ll ever try. There are seasonal colours and themes, with Spring day showing the transition from Winter with a lot of orange, peach, black and white, and more pieces that feature soft, light blues and denim to compliment the washed purples, prints, greens and browns of the summer.
Of course, I particularly liked the blue designs, and there is some great rejuvenation of the clinched-waist, baggy-trouser style, all with pockets and a fabulous range of small and large blue prints that I would love in my wardrobe this season to style with some striped tops and white sandals. There is also a great attention to small details which makes those basics just a little bit more special, such as a small zip edging to the denim shirts, cut-out patterns, and dyes to reflect a very natural and fluid inspiration.
To put their unique twist on the brand and designs, Sandwich has taken an idea so simple that you wouldn’t even notice it until you looked it up – each piece has a ‘twist’, meaning there’s always a pleat, asymmetric hem, ruched stitch or tailored tweak to make each piece and design different from the next. It’s such a cute way to make the brand standout and have their own stamp without making pieces unwearable to a larger market, and if anything it makes the pieces fit and look better on than before.
Another part I particularly liked about the collection is that white has been updated and made fun to wear along with monochrome – embossed and cut-out features, to bits of tie-dye to reflect the retro comebacks and add a little somethin’somethin to your look, and also it keeps you warm on colder Summer evenings which I for one definitely need!
As well as the showcase, the fab little photobooth to play dress up in was an absolute must – the glasses and scarf have me written all over it! – plus a look behind the designs of the new collection was a great way to envisage the brand and ethos further; the classic twist runs throughout, whilst bold prints, pinks and nature gave pieces their floaty touch. Just to make you feel that little more spendy, the ‘doll dress’ up table allowed us to piece our favourite items together to see how they’d work together, and I can say that I definitely need the blue jumper and animal print trousers in my life now…
Sandwich has got it covered if you want light, tailored pieces to see you through the warmer seasons, that also fit your shape and have a high, minimalist quality to them. The blue jumpers and soft denims are fabulous to start wearing now to tame your Summer longing, and you can see that the pieces are thought through to evolve you wardrobe during the year. If you’re one for simple but capsule pieces, then you need to check out Gemini and Sandwich – but be quick, as once their stock is gone I’ve been told it doesn’t come back in!
Classic, minimalism pieces for SS15? I can totally get on board. All I need now is my LFW stream and I’m ready to soak up the new collection until my wardrobe cries out for a spring clean – all the better to make you look stylish, I promise!
Have you heard of Sandwich? Are you a fan of classic minimalist pieces? What is your favourite upcoming trend?
Lots of Love,
